Cultural Tidbit – Festivals 世界のおもしろ祭

2012.6.10 Sun

The temperature is rising fast and that means summertime and festival season is here.  I hope you are checking out some of the amazing festivals in Japan.  Like Japan, festivals in other parts of world are very diverse.  Music festivals are very popular in lots of the English-speaking countries. Some of these music festivals last for days and people will sometimes camp in large fields to hear dozens of different artists.  One of the most famous examples of this is Woodstock, which took place in New York way back in 1969.

Some funny festivals around the world include –
Spivey's Corner, N.C., USA – The residents of this small town host “hollering” contests (much like yelling).
Gloucester, England – Participants race down a steep hill while rolling wheels of cheese!
Fruita, Colorado, USA - Mike the Headless Chicken Days – The people of this town celebrate a chicken that lived for 18 months after having his head chopped off in 1945 – true story!

Cartoon

2012.5.21 Mon

It’s been so much fun shopping in Japan – there are so many cute things!  Many of the characters you see on items in the stores today were very popular in America during the 1980s – back when I was growing up!  Care Bears, Popples and Transformers were some of my favorite cartoons, so it is great to see them again.  Whenever a trend from earlier times, like the clothing from the 1970s or the TV shows from the 1980s come back in style, we say this is “retrostyle” or just “retro”.
Other great cartoons which I remember from my childhood include Thundercats, Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry, and Mickey Mouse.  You can often find clips of any of these on YouTube – it’s a fun way for your kids to practice English!

Thank you Cassie,we LOVE you!!!!!!!!!!

Message board in April

2012.4.26 Thu

I am very excited to join the Iwata Gakuen family as the new English teacher for Mitama and Izumi Kindergartens.  I know everyone is sad to see Cassie leave, but I hope to continue her good work.  Cassie has been working hard to teach me all the fun games and songs that your children love, so I know that this year will be great!

I look forward to getting to know you and your children.  We will have many fun days ahead in the Iwata Gakuen English Club.  Please feel free to ask me any questions or simply stop for a chat!

Thank you,
Becky Stockhorst

March Madness

2012.3.8 Thu

If you're planning on going to America in March, be prepared for March Madness! It's for all of the basketball fans out there. It is a single elimination college basketball tournament.

This year, there are 67 games. Everyone has their favorites and usually make bets about the top four. It's amazing the rivalries that come to light during this month. For my home state in North Carolina, it's all about Duke and Carolina. If you have a chance, you should check it out. Play ball!

バスケットボールに熱狂する3月。
