Christmas has been celebrated for hundreds of years but it's only been in the last couple hundred years that the majority of our traditions began.
For instance, the Christmas tree started in Germany and quickly spread to England and then America. Poinsettias came to America from Mexico because of its colorful leaves and the little golden flowers reminded Mexicans of the star of Bethlehem. In Greece, they spell Christ as Xristos. So when they wrote in short hand they wrote Christmas as Xmas. Have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year!
クリスマスは何百年も前からありますが、現在のようなクリスマスの慣習は、ほんの200年前頃から始まったものです。例えばクリスマスツリー。これはドイツで誕生し、イギリス、そしてアメリカにまたたく間に広まりました。ポインセチアはメキシコからアメリカに伝わりました。メキシコ人は、鮮やかな葉に小さな金色の花がつくポインセチアから、ベツレヘムの星を連想したのです。ギリシャではキリストをXristosと書きます。それでクリスマスを略して書くときはXmasと記すようになりました。素敵なクリスマスと楽しい新年をお過ごしください！
日本ではX'masとXの後ろにアポストロフィをつけているのをよく見かけますが、これは誤りです。X自体でChristの意味があり、文字を省略しているのではないのでアポストロフィはつけません。
