Cultural Tidbit – Festivals 世界のおもしろ祭

2012.6.10 Sun

The temperature is rising fast and that means summertime and festival season is here.  I hope you are checking out some of the amazing festivals in Japan.  Like Japan, festivals in other parts of world are very diverse.  Music festivals are very popular in lots of the English-speaking countries. Some of these music festivals last for days and people will sometimes camp in large fields to hear dozens of different artists.  One of the most famous examples of this is Woodstock, which took place in New York way back in 1969.

Some funny festivals around the world include –
Spivey's Corner, N.C., USA – The residents of this small town host “hollering” contests (much like yelling).
Gloucester, England – Participants race down a steep hill while rolling wheels of cheese!
Fruita, Colorado, USA - Mike the Headless Chicken Days – The people of this town celebrate a chicken that lived for 18 months after having his head chopped off in 1945 – true story!
